3rd December

Today I got these pizzas with boxes in my Lundby calendar. Not exactly the traditional Christmas dinner though... In Norway there are different Christmas dinner traditions depending on which part of the country you're from. In the south many have codfish for their Christmas dinner and many eat it like lutefish (dried cod fish treated with lye).

Very popular, especially in the western part of Norway is pinnekjøtt, which is salted lamb ribs that are laid in water with birch branches at the bottom of the pan. The ribs are cut into individual servings. Birch twigs are laid crosswise in the bottom of the saucepan to form a lattice upon which to set the ribs. The pan is filled with water up to the level of the twigs and the ribs meat are placed on the twigs. Then the meat is steamed over the boiling water until done, about two hours.

My parents always have roasted pork rib for Christmas, served together with small sausages, home made meat balls, cooked potatoes, gravy, sour cabbage, red cabbage and prunes.

My husband and I prefer stuffed turkey, which is the tradition in his family. Served with home made waldorf salad, cooked potatoes, thick gravy, peas, apples and prunes. Mmmm, yummy!

Takk Anne Mari! Har jeg også lest, men jeg tok ikke det med på listen over norsk julemat allikevel :-)

Den kalenderen ser veldig bra ut. Spennende å følge med på hva du får hver dag:)

Those pizzas will be very useful when Nora has been out Christmas shopping and is too tired to cook dinner :)

Takk Christel, så hyggelig å se deg her :-) Men disse pizzane er ikke i nærheten av å være så fine som dine!

How big is this calendar? It can hold so many great things? 2 pizzas?

I love all the traditional foods that you have mentioned except turkey which is what we eat here ALL the time for Xmas!! Turkey & honey baked ham.... as you can tell, they are not my fav. So funny as I was reading your post, I was telling myself, finally, other foods except turkey and then you ended with stuffed turkey being your favourite! *giggles

This year, my family is celebrating Xmas early on 19/12/09. It will be potluck. Mum's cooking Thai pineapple rice and the best Chinese soup in the world. I am bringing chicken cooked in spicy black sauce and sesame oil. :):):)

Thank Eli. They're not my work, they came in my Lundby calendar :-)

Sans, the pizzas are just 2.2cm in diameter, so definitely pizzas for one person only. The calendar is 38x40cm.
And sorry to disappoint you about me preferring turkey:-) Every day in the rest of the year I would love to have your chicken in spicy black sauce with sesame oil instead (One of my favourite dishes!) Your mother's Thai pineapple rice sounds delicious as well! But for Christmas it has to be traditional meat with potatoes, gravy and prunes for me.

uuups - you folks eat weird things for christmas dinner ;D -> lutefish (dried cod fish)... hm, i would prefer the turkey like you!!

and meanwhile i´m learning about scandinavian christmas rites, i´m yearning for my own calendar! the pizzas are so nice and the little packaging, too!!!... but tomorrow i´ll hopefully open 4 little doors at once ;D

Nicola, I must admit I have never tasted lutefish, but I'm quite sure I wouldn't like it! To make things worse the dried cod fish is treated with lye (lut)!
I hope so too, I want a full report of what you're getting as well :-)

I see there is a Facebook group called "Yes, I'm not a kid anymore but I still want an advent calendar", perhaps Nora and Helmer would like to join it :) LOL
